About Aldrin

I am Lady Aldrin inn Gladis. I live in the Barony of Shattered Crystal, on the western border of the Middle Kingdom. I am an avid fiber artist with interest in everything from spinning and felting to sewing and embroidery.

I have been in the SCA since late 2020. My husband and I found the society during some research I was doing for Halloween costumes. The plague was upon the land and zoom calls were the only way to interact with the Barony for the first 9 months, but we quickly made connections. We attended a few events that first year after the plague, culminating in our first Gulf Wars trip in 2022. During that week, I found great joy in the dye tent in Artisan’s Row and received my AoA.

Some of the highlights of my A&S activities include:

  • Embroidery: I have done a good amount of free-form embroidery. This has been decorative in purpose with little to no focus on historical accuracy.
  • Tablet weaving: I greatly enjoy tablet weaving and have worked with a few techniques including:
    • Double face weave
    • Sulawesi
    • Tubular selvages
    • Skipped hole
    • Finnish tablet woven selvages (finishing edges of woven cloth with tablet weaving)
  • Teaching: I have taught a few classes at events as well as done some informal instruction at Barony meetings and artisans greens.
    • Origins and making of the Eura dress
    • Double face tablet weaving
    • Assistant coordinator for Fibers-Wet at Gulf Wars Artisans Row
  • Projects:
    • Hedeby bag: For Kingdom A&S 2022 I completed a frame-handled bag in the style of the Hedeby finds.
    • Sheep-to-scarf: For the baronial A&S championship last year, I entered a scarf that I wove. It was made with yarn that I skirted, scoured, combed, spun, and dyed myself.
    • Finnish Iron age garb: I am in the process of researching a Finnish iron age garb project. I am currently in the proof-of-concept phase and practicing the new concepts with at-hand materials.

My mundane name is Laura LeTang and I can be found on Facebook by that name.
